Gender Affirming Insurance Community Fund

The Gender Affirmation Care we receive as undergraduate students at Concordia is subpar in service and its offerings. The requirement to pay for services upfront is a massive barrier for most trans people seeking treatment and is out of reach for most students.

This program has $20,000 set aside for trans students at Concordia to make the insurance accessible. Taking the form of Interest Free loans of up to $10,000*, anyone who qualifies to use or has successfully used the insurance is eligible for using our fund.

Please use this checklist to prepare what you need so that you can access the insurance fund.

The General Contract

In order to prevent any fraud and eliminating the fund, recipients must sign a contract for their loan of the funds. Funds remain interest free for 2 months where after it will accrue interest unless you can make your case to the board of directors for why interest should be paused (Bank holds, GreenShield processing error, etc.).

Loans are only given to those who meet the conditions of the checklist below. We can help you meet certain conditions if you are having difficulty navigating the confusing insurance system that is StudentCare.

The contract is just a fallback for liability purposes.

As of September 2025, The GreenShield+ Online portal is non-functional. You must submit claims directly through GreenShield’s Support line via email: customer.service@greenshield.ca

International Students are eligible for the Community Fund so long as they have opted in with CSU’s dental plan as they are packaged together. The health and dental plan is processed by Desjardins or BlueCross as an international student. Ensure you are registered for the Health/Dental Plan prior to registering for the Gender Affirmation Benefit. The same checklist requirements still apply.

Studentcare adds some arbitrary additional restrictions to the care plan to prevent students from using it such as a $5,000 maximum on any single procedure and $50,000 lifetime maximum. This is only mentioned on StudentCare’s GAC information page, not the GreenShield booklet.

Some services like electrolysis are covered by the insurance but are not listed in the booklet, this is why it is important to get a pre-authorization for your first claim of any type of service. Repeat claims for the same service do not require pre-authorization.

For example, if you previously used $500 of the GAC insurance and are doing facial feminization surgery, simultaneously a Rhinoplasty and Hairline adjustment that individually each costs $6,000 (total $12,000), you will only be reimbursed $9,500.

This is because you exceeded the $50,000 Lifetime Limit and the $5,000 procedure limit.

($5,000 from Rhinoplasty, $4,500 from the Hairline adjustment).

Not satisfied with the coverage? Neither are we!
